Let’s look at rehabilitation and overcoming addiction as if it were a board game. In order to win you must successfully navigate each space on the board. This doesn’t necessarily mean you must land on each space, only that you must finish the game. The spaces available are as follows |
| |
|
Pre-rehabilitative Care
In some cases an addicts condition is so far gone that they will require some services before
being admitted to a residential rehabilitation facility. this will include medical detox and in some cases psychiatric stabelization and evaluation. |
| |
|
Intervention
Intervention is an action taken by the loved ones of an addict in an effort stopthe destructive
course of the addict’s life by pressuring the addict to make the decision to improve his or
her own life. An intervention’s only purpose is to have an addict arrive safely at a Substance Abuse Facility and begin recovery. Intervention is a popular approach to addiction these days especially since the arrival of the A&E television series Intervention. Intervention is an action taken by the loved ones of an addict in an effort change the course of the addict’s life. |

Medically Assisted Detox
Medically Assisted Detox is only necessary when a physical addiction to a substance such as Heroin, Zanex, Barbituates, Alcohol or prescription medications creates health risks for the individual individual who would like to discontinue using that substance. Therefore it
will be necessary in these cases for an addict to be placed under the care of a medical doctor to supervise his or her detoxification. |
| |
|
|
Rapid Detox
Rapid Detoxify is a form of detoxification developed strictly for opiate drugs (heroin, Oxycontin, or morphine)
users. This is a process where an opiate addict residentially placed in a chemically induced coma so they do not to have to endure the physical pain associated with “cold turkey” heroin withdrawal.
While anesthetized a substance called naltroxin is administered which immediately causes the addict to go in to full blown withdrawal which would be incredibly un comfortable should the person be conscious. Naltroxin is administered to people who are rushed to the hospital for heroin or opiate overdose as it so effectively purges and blocks the absorbtion of opiates |
| |
|
|
Buprenorphine/Suboxone Detox
Buprenorphine and Suboxone are treatments for opiate detoxification. They are new
substances which can help ease the withdrawal symptoms from opiates. They are a two-part substance which both blocks absorption of opiates and eases the withdrawal symptoms.
these are substitute medications for the more comonly prescribed drug methadone. |

In Patient Rehabilitation
Inpatient rehabilitation is the most critical phase of one’s rehabilitation. This is where new life skills are learned and old behaviors are confronted. This is where the change happens and an individual is actually rehabilitated or returned to an earlier healthy state. There are quite
literally thousands of Inpatient rehabilitation facilities across North America but they
themselves fall into only five different categories. These programs can range anywhere from
28 days to one year or more in length.
|
| |
|
|
Behavior Modification
Treatment is characterized by group confrontation. These are strict modified 12-step
programs, where peoples spirits are broken down in order to rebuild from a clean slate. They are
usually government funded.
these programs traditionally have a high numbers of dropouts or people who don't complete the treatment as the find the practices too rigerous. |
| |
|
|
Dual Diagnosis
Dual Diagnosis facilities are created for those addicts who have been diagnosed with an
addiction disorder as well as an underlying and co-occurring mental disorder.
these treatments usually involve the use of a psychiatrist as in the majority of cases the individuals in need of such care are abusing not only street drugs but their prescribed medications as well |
| |
|
|
12-Step
Treatment is modeled after the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous , rooted in the belief
that addiction is an incurable disease to be managed rather than cured/conquered. The twelve steps is based on the "big book" of alcoholics anonymous this program was tailor made to treat alcoholism and as a result is best used to treat alcoholism. |
| |
|
|
Religious
Mild in nature, addicts seek help through spiritual guidance and hard work.
in every case the moral codes of the religion are sought after in the every day activities of the facillity. and used as a model for successfull living. |
| |
|
|
Biophysical
Treatment is non-medical, non-religious and holistic in approach. It pays specific attention
to the physical side of addiction in order to eliminate the symptoms of addiction. Addiction is classified as a curable condition, rather than an incurable disease. these programs are growing in popularity as they are in many cases able to boast nearly 80% success rates for all addictions |
| |
|
|
Post-rehabilitative Care
These are treatment options that can be done upon the completion of residential rehabilitation program to ensure that addicts and their families have continued success with their recovery.
|
| |
|
|
Family Counseling
Family Counseling is strongly recommended where a family member has made the decision
to undergo residential rehabilitation as this is a family problem and it affects each family
member differently. The focus here is to make a change as a family unit rather than place
the blame solely on one member. Family Counseling will help to ensure that the environment
the addict returns to after treatment has changed. Tthis allows the entire family to experience emotional growth.

|
|
Out Patient Rehabilitation
Out patient rehabilitation is a form of care that exists but would not be conceived of as
primary care in the vast majority of cases. Out patient care is not well supervised as the client doesn’t reside full time in the facility; rather, he or she comes each day for counseling
services. This is ideal for youths or people whose addictions are very new and not yet
developed. Out patient care is also ideal as an after care, relapse prevention situation once
a residential treatment facility has been completed.
