Being that Yukon is a territory that’s population is spread over a vast area this means that depending on where a person lives they may be required to travel some distance in order to receive addictions services, for example there isn’t a single withdrawal management facility servicing the entire territory which makes it impossible to safely detox with out traveling to another province or territory. The Yukon is a territory which similarly to the other territories has adopted a fairly minimalist approach to its citizens’ drug and alcohol addiction. Although the following types of treatment: detoxification, drug rehab, long term residential, short term residential, out patient, and day programs are available in Yukon’s 11 various rehab facilities.

There are approximately 2,500 People from the Yukon in need of detoxification, intervention, and drug rehab or alcohol rehabilitation programs, coupled with short term or long term after care. There are no Detox facilities and only 1 residential facility which can accommodate approximately 40 addicts bringing the total number of available Government funded beds to approximately 40 beds to be divided amongst the 2,500 that need treatment. Of the 11 facilities located in the Yukon 8 are out patient programs that offer very little support to alcoholics and addicts. Addiction Treatment Yukon
With the Yukon Addictions Survey’s preliminary results released, the Yukon government will now go into more detail on addictions issues before looking at a policy to deal with the issues. It found that in comparing the general population of the Yukon to the rest of Canada’s population, there aren’t a lot of major differences in the amount of alcohol, cannabis and tobacco being consumed. A chart showing the percentage of alcohol and other drug use in the past year for those more than 15 years old shows the Canadian average of 79 per cent for alcohol for the general population matches the Yukon average. The high-risk group in the Yukon is up to 81 per cent. A total of 21 per cent of the Yukon’s general population used cannabis in the last year with 74 per cent of the high-risk category using cannabis in the last year. The national average is 14 per cent.
Past statistics have shown the Yukon has the highest per capita liquor sales in the country. Not only were there a lot more users of cannabis and cocaine in the high-risk group, there were also enough users of hallucinogens, ecstatically and methamphetimine to create a percentage.

Yukon Intervention Services
A drug abuser usually does not know he is out of control. He looks at his drug-using peers and his own use appears normal in comparison. He needs objective feedback on his behavior. Drug or alcohol abuse intervention is a process that helps an abuser recognize the extent of his problem. Through a non-judgmental, non-critical, systematic process, the drug addict is confronted with the impact of his alcohol or drug use on others. The goal of drug abuse intervention is for him to accept the reality of his drug abuse and to seek help. If you need help finding an intervention service in the Yukon please call Canada Rehab today! 1-800-419-7941. |
